Latest changes

  • October 7, 2026 Register
Register: Register checked through October 7, 2026. Pennsylvania's SB 980 moved to a second House committee, and Rhode Island's DEM published its guidance for product exemption requests. The register now records the signing date of 18 more laws, so the map's past views show each law from the day it was signed. New: a tracker of every pending bill, rule and court case at /bills. The register holds 361 provisions.
  • October 7, 2026 Update
Pennsylvania: SB 980 was re-referred in the House to the Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, two days after the Senate passed it 48-1.
  • October 6, 2026 Rule
Rhode Island: DEM published guidance on requesting a product exemption from the Consumer PFAS Ban Act: manufacturers apply by email with a sworn package, DEM must find no comparable non-PFAS product at reasonable cost, and exemptions run up to five years.
  • October 5, 2026 Register
Register: Register checked through October 5, 2026. Pennsylvania's Senate passed SB 980, the Class B foam and firefighter gear label bill, which now goes to the House, and Rhode Island's DEM said which appliance parts count as cookware under the January 1, 2027 ban. New on the site: a map of every state's PFAS rules that plays from 2019 to 2032, a checker that lists the bans and duties a product faces in the states you choose on any date, deadline calendars you can subscribe to, and a press kit with an embeddable map. The register holds 361 provisions.
  • October 5, 2026 Update
Pennsylvania: The Senate passed SB 980 by 48-1. It would end sales of Class B foam with intentionally added PFAS from July 1, 2027 and its use from January 1, 2028, and require PFAS warning labels on firefighter gear. The bill now goes to the House.
  • October 2, 2026 Register
Register: Register checked through October 2, 2026. Added Delaware's foam and firefighter gear law (signed September 30) and the Defense Department limits that took effect October 1, and confirmed the New Mexico labeling injunction on the court record. Corrections: the register had omitted New Jersey's apparel and diaper law (P.L.2026, c.76, approved August 27, 2026), Virginia's Richmond airport foam plan (2026 Acts ch. 340), West Virginia's 2021 foam use law, Maryland's 2021 cosmetics law covering 13 PFAS, and New Mexico's AFFF rule in effect since August 1, 2026. The register now holds 361 provisions.
  • October 1, 2026 Took effect
United States (federal): Defense Department limits set by the NDAA took effect: no purchases of firefighting foam with detectable PFAS, no fluorinated AFFF at remaining military installations, and no purchases of firefighter gear that fails the NFPA 1970 restricted substances list.
  • September 30, 2026 Enacted
Delaware: Governor Meyer signed House Substitute 1 for HB 356 (85 Del. Laws c. 543): Class B foam with intentionally added PFAS may not be made or sold by manufacturers from January 1, 2028, and sellers of firefighter gear with PFAS must give buyers a written notice from January 1, 2027.

How this register works

Every row comes from the statute, session law, agency rule or official notice that creates it, and each source is linked beside the date. Dates are the ones in the current law; when an amendment moved a date, the change log records the old and new dates. Entries confirmed only on a secondary source carry a mark saying so. The whole register, 361 provisions, was last checked on October 7, 2026. Read the method, the definitions behind terms like intentionally added and total organic fluorine, or request the dataset. New to the subject? Start with what PFAS are.

Common questions

Which states ban PFAS in cookware?

Seven states ban intentionally added PFAS in cookware. In force: Minnesota (since January 1, 2025); Colorado and Maine (since January 1, 2026). Scheduled: New Mexico and Rhode Island (January 1, 2027); Connecticut (January 1, 2028); Vermont (July 1, 2028). Other duties apply in California (labeling or disclosure, since January 1, 2023), New Jersey (labeling or disclosure, from January 12, 2028) and Washington (reporting, since January 1, 2026).

Which states ban PFAS in all products?

Three states ban intentionally added PFAS in all products. Scheduled: Maine, Minnesota and New Mexico (January 1, 2032).

Is there a federal ban on PFAS in products?

There is no federal ban on PFAS in consumer products. Since October 1, 2026, the Defense Department may not buy firefighting foam with detectable PFAS or firefighter gear that fails the NFPA 1970 restricted substances list. EPA's one-time TSCA reporting window opens by January 31, 2027. The 2024 drinking water limits remain in force while EPA proposes to rescind four of them, and PFOA and PFOS remain CERCLA hazardous substances after the D.C. Circuit upheld the listing on August 18, 2026.

When is the TSCA PFAS reporting deadline?

No submission window is open yet. Under EPA's April 13, 2026 final rule, the six-month window opens January 31, 2027, or 60 days after EPA's pending revisions rule takes effect if that comes first. Small businesses reporting only as article importers get twelve months. EPA proposed in November 2025 to exempt imported articles, but that change is not final.
