Key numbers
- 17states ban intentionally added PFAS in at least one consumer product: 13 in force today and 4 scheduled.
- 31states ban or restrict PFAS firefighting foam.
- 9states have consumer product bans that take effect in 2027: California, Colorado, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington. Florida, Illinois and Massachusetts add firefighting foam or gear bans that year.
- 3states will ban intentionally added PFAS in all products, with exemptions: Maine, Minnesota and New Mexico.
- 7states will have banned PFAS in cookware once every enacted date arrives.
- 361provisions in the register, each with its effective date, status and primary source.
Counts cover the 50 states and DC. A ban means a prohibition on selling products with intentionally added PFAS in a category; use limits, reporting and labeling duties are counted separately. The method page explains each status.
